Mi Unlock “Couldn’t Verify” and “This Device Is Not Activated” Error Fix
Seeing “Couldn’t verify” in Mi Unlock status, or “This device is not activated” in Mi Unlock Tool? Here is what each error means and the fixes that work, starting with the most common one.
Updated: October 7, 2026
Quick fix
- Turn off Wi-Fi and bind your account in Mi Unlock status using mobile data.
- On HyperOS, get unlock permission in the Xiaomi Community app first.
- Keep a SIM in the phone and use it normally with your Mi Account for a few days.
- Sign out of Mi Unlock Tool, sign in again, and reinstall the drivers.
What these errors mean
Both errors come from Xiaomi’s server, not from your PC. The server is saying it can’t confirm that your account is allowed to unlock this phone yet.
| Error message | Where you see it | Main cause |
|---|---|---|
| Couldn’t verify, wait a minute or two and try again | Phone, in Mi Unlock status | Binding done on Wi-Fi, or a busy server |
| Couldn’t verify. Try adding your account and device again | Phone, in Mi Unlock status | Binding failed or expired |
| Couldn’t verify device / Can’t get info | Mi Unlock Tool on PC | Missing drivers or bad USB connection |
| This device is not activated, please activate it and try to unlock it again | Mi Unlock Tool on PC | No HyperOS permission, or Xiaomi can’t find the phone’s sales data |
Before you start: quick checks
- A SIM card is inserted and has mobile data.
- The phone runs the official ROM, with no root or custom ROM.
- Find Device is on (Settings > Mi Account > Xiaomi Cloud).
- The same Mi Account is used on the phone and in Mi Unlock Tool.
- You are using the latest Mi Unlock Tool.
Fix 1: Bind your account on mobile data
This fixes most “Couldn’t verify” messages. Xiaomi checks the SIM network during binding, and Wi-Fi often makes it fail.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and turn on mobile data.
- Open Settings > Additional settings > Developer options > Mi Unlock status.
- Tap Add account and device.
- Wait for “Added successfully”. If it fails, wait 2 minutes and try again.
Don’t tap the button again and again. Too many tries in a short time can lock binding for a while. Two or three tries, a few minutes apart, is enough.
Fix 2: Get HyperOS unlock permission first
On HyperOS phones, “This device is not activated” often means you skipped the permission step. Mi Unlock Tool won’t work until Xiaomi approves your account.
- Install the Xiaomi Community app from the Play Store.
- Go to Me > Settings > Region and choose Global.
- Sign in with your Mi Account.
- Open Unlock bootloader and tap Apply. Answer the short quiz if it appears.
- After approval, wait at least a day, then bind the account again (Fix 1).
Timing tip: the daily application quota resets at midnight Beijing time (GMT+8). That is 9:00 PM in Pakistan, 9:30 PM in India and 7:00 PM in UAE. If you see “quota limit reached”, apply again right after that time.
Fix 3: Use the phone normally for a few days
Xiaomi wants to see a real, active device. If the phone is new, reset recently, or the account is brand new, the server may refuse it.
- Keep a working SIM in the phone.
- Stay signed in to your Mi Account with Find Device on.
- Use the phone normally for 3 to 7 days, then try again.
- Users widely report that accounts younger than about 30 days fail more often.
Fix 4: Sign out and sign in again
- In Mi Unlock Tool, click your account name and choose Sign out. Sign in again.
- On the phone, make sure you are signed in to the same account.
- Click the gear icon in the tool and reinstall the drivers.
- Reconnect the phone in Fastboot mode and try again.
Fix 5: Check the phone’s region and purchase
If the error never goes away, the cause is often the phone itself, not your steps.
- China model with a global account: Xiaomi blocks this. You need an account and community app from the same region as the phone.
- Grey-market or reflashed phones: if the phone was sold outside official channels, Xiaomi may have no sales record for it. That is a common reason for “not activated”.
- Fix: contact Xiaomi support or an official service center with your purchase bill. They can check the device record.
Fix 6: “Couldn’t verify device” on the PC
If the tool on your PC says it can’t verify the device, the problem is the connection, not your account.
- Reinstall drivers from the gear icon.
- Use a USB 2.0 port and the original cable.
- Keep the tool in a short folder path like C:\MiUnlock.
- Try another PC, ideally Intel-based.

Still not working?
If you tried every fix and waited a week, contact Xiaomi support through the Mi Community app or visit an official service center with the phone’s box and bill.
Avoid paid “bypass” or modified unlock tools. They can’t change Xiaomi’s server checks, and they can brick the phone or get your account flagged.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Mi Unlock say “This device is not activated”?
Xiaomi’s server can’t find valid sales or activation data for the phone, or your HyperOS unlock permission is missing. Use the phone normally with a SIM for a few days, get permission in the Xiaomi Community app, and bind the account again.
Why does Mi Unlock status say “Couldn’t verify, wait a minute or two”?
The binding request failed. This usually happens on Wi-Fi. Turn off Wi-Fi, use mobile data, and tap Add account and device again.
Can I bind my Mi Account on Wi-Fi?
It often fails. Xiaomi checks the SIM network during binding, so mobile data works far more reliably.
What time does the Xiaomi Community unlock quota reset in Pakistan?
The daily quota resets at midnight Beijing time (GMT+8), which is 9:00 PM in Pakistan (PKT). Apply right after 9:00 PM for the best chance.
Can a bypass tool fix the “not activated” error?
No. Bypass and modified tools don’t fix server-side checks and can brick the phone or get your account flagged. If the phone is yours, contact Xiaomi support with the purchase bill.
