Mi Unlock 168 Hours Waiting Time: Why It Happens and What to Do
Mi Unlock Tool says “Please unlock 168 hours later”? This is Xiaomi’s security wait. Here is why it exists, what makes it longer, and how to finish the unlock without starting the timer again.
Updated: October 14, 2026
Short answer
- The 168-hour (7-day) wait is set by Xiaomi’s server. It can’t be bypassed.
- Don’t sign out, reset the phone, or bind the account again while you wait.
- Keep the SIM in and use the phone normally with the same Mi Account.
- After the time shown, connect in Fastboot and click Unlock again.
What does “Please unlock 168 hours later” mean?
The first time you click Unlock, Mi Unlock Tool checks your account with Xiaomi’s server. If the account was bound recently, the server says you must wait. The most common wait is 168 hours, which is 7 days.
It is not an error. Your steps were correct. You just need to come back later.
Why Xiaomi makes you wait
An unlocked bootloader makes a phone easier to tamper with. The wait protects owners whose phones are stolen.
- A thief can’t unlock a stolen phone straight away.
- The real owner has time to notice and lock the device with Find Device.
- It stops shops from unlocking large numbers of phones in a day.
Waiting times you may see
The number in the tool is set for your account and device, so it differs from person to person.
| Wait shown | In days | Common reason |
|---|---|---|
| 168 hours | 7 days | Normal wait for most accounts |
| 360 hours | 15 days | Newer or less active account |
| 720 hours | 30 days | Some devices, or accounts with little history |
| 72 hours | 3 days | “Binding time is too short” message right after binding |
What resets the timer (avoid these)
Doing any of these can start the wait again from zero.
- Signing out of the Mi Account on the phone
- Factory resetting the phone
- Tapping Add account and device again in Mi Unlock status
- Binding a different Mi Account to the phone
- Removing the SIM for a long time
What to do while you wait
- Write down the time. Note the date and time shown in the tool, or take a photo of the screen.
- Disconnect the phone. You don’t need to keep it in Fastboot or connected to the PC.
- Use the phone normally. Keep the SIM in, stay signed in, and keep Find Device on.
- Back up your data. Unlocking wipes the phone, so this is the best time to save photos, contacts and chats.
- Get the files ready. Download the ROM, recovery or Magisk files you plan to flash after unlocking.
How to unlock after the wait ends
- Turn off the phone and hold Volume Down + Power to enter Fastboot.
- Open Mi Unlock Tool on the same PC, signed in with the same account.
- Connect the phone and wait for Phone connected.
- Click Unlock and confirm. The unlock usually takes under a minute.
If the tool shows a new error instead, check the Mi Unlock Tool error list or our guide to “Couldn’t verify” and “Not activated” errors.
Can you skip the 168 hours?
No. The timer lives on Xiaomi’s server. Nothing on your PC or phone can change it.
You will find “168 hours bypass” and “unlock without waiting” tools online. They don’t work on Xiaomi’s server checks, and many of them:
- Install malware or steal passwords
- Charge money for something that can’t be done
- Get your Mi Account flagged, which can make the wait longer
HyperOS phones: the wait comes after permission
On HyperOS, you first need approval in the Xiaomi Community app. The waiting timer only matters after that. If the tool says “not activated” or asks you to apply in Mi Community, do that step first. Our step-by-step bootloader unlock guide covers it. If Mi Unlock status says “Please go to Mi Community to apply for authorization”, see this fix.
Frequently asked questions
Can I bypass the 168 hours waiting time?
No. The timer runs on Xiaomi’s server, not on your PC or phone, so no tool can skip it. Sites that sell a “168 hours bypass” are scams or ship malware.
Does the timer reset if I sign out of my Mi Account?
It can. Signing out, removing the account, factory resetting the phone or binding again can all restart the wait. Keep everything as it is until the time is up.
Why does my tool show 360 or 720 hours instead of 168?
Xiaomi sets the wait per account and device. Newer accounts, accounts with little activity, and some devices get longer waits. The number in the tool is the one that counts.
Do I have to keep the phone connected to the PC while waiting?
No. You can disconnect it and use the phone normally. Just come back after the time shown and connect it in Fastboot mode again.
Can I use the phone normally during the 168 hours?
Yes. Keep your SIM in, stay signed in to the same Mi Account, and use the phone as usual. Normal use actually helps.
I waited 168 hours but it asks me to wait again. Why?
Something restarted the timer, such as a new binding, a reset, or a sign-out. Check that the same account is still bound in Mi Unlock status, then wait out the new time.
